General

Technical Management

This course "Master of Engineering in Technical Management" provides detailed knowledge for the management of engineering projects and processes. The students are prepared for first executive tasks in the engineering area. The study program stresses a fields-general and problem-oriented approach. The graduates learn to develop and to implement problem-solving strategies in a creative and independent way. The language of instruction is English.

Students are offered to acquire advanced skills in German.They can be part of the curriculum as a compulsory optional subject. The master course and its degree is fully accredited by Zentrale Evaluationsagentur (ZEvA) Hannover. The accreditation assures and validates both highest standards in teaching and studying and an international acknowledged degree.

Content

The one and a half year masters course consists of 90 credit points and is arranged in three terms. One term starts in September and ends in January, with lectures and project-oriented laboratory lessons concentrates on different management fields. In the other term (March to June) a scientific-engineering project work has to be done in addition to lectures and labs. The third term is reserved for the master thesis work. The student can freely choose on her/his account to prepare the master thesis at the university or in industry. The student can choose various eligible management and engineering courses and thus form her/his own course. Students may specialize in different fields considering their individual interests, especially research interest, professional experience or career planning. This schedule is an example which does not include all offered courses. Some of the courses will be offered each semester whereas others will only be offered in either the first or the second semester:

1. Term Strategic Management, Quality Management, Production Management System, Applied Statistics, Negotiation and Leadership, International Commercial Law...
2. Term Computer Aided Geometric Design, Project Management Fundamentals, Renewable Energies, SAP R/3 Advanced Course, Language and Culture...

Admission

Requirements to study Master of engineering of Technical Management:

  • A Diploma degree, or a Bachelor degree, or an equivalent qualification with a minimum of 3.5 years of study in a technical domain. Electrical
  • Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Natural Sciences, Information Science, etc.
  • For applicants with a Bachelor degree with 3 years of study in a technical domain, a single case decision is possible.
  • At least an average mark in your final degree.
  • A TOEFL or an equivalent test (e.g.: TOEFL PBT, IELTS, Cambridge CPE), that proofs your knowledge of English language.
  • First knowlegde of German language is not compulsory, but will give a competitive edge in admission-procedure, as well in aiming for an internship to compose the master thesis in a german company. Post graduate work experience is not compulsory to get admission, but will give an egde, too.

Documents to prepare for paper based application

  • Download the application PDF-form (pdf). Complete the first page of the form on screen and print afterwards both pages.
  • Affix a passport photograph (name/date of birth on the backside) to first page of printed form.
  • Attach the following papers to your application:
    • Curriculum vitae.
    • Statement of purpose (only one page).
    • All previous university degree certificate(s).
    • Marksheets with titles and grades of all courses attended.
    • Last school-certificate before you started to study.
    • APS-certificate (only compulsory for applicants from P.R.China).
    • Certificate of proficiency in English language, e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, CPE. (Only to be omitted if your mother tongue is English.)
    • Certificate of proficiency in German language (not compulsory).
    • Testimonials from companies you already worked with after graduating from university (not compulsory).
  • All copies of orginal documents and their translated transcripts must be authenticated. This could be done by the registrar at your university, the German Embassy, German Consulate or German Diplomatic Representation in your country, a notary or other public administration offices.
  • Don't attach recommendation letters or training certificates to your application.
  • If you are just on the way to finish your final project, you are invited to apply without the bachelors degree certificate. Attach a certification of your university including the date when you will finish. But you definitely need to present your final degree certificate upon enrolment.
  • Put all documents as loose sheets in one large envelope. Please, do not send folders or separate envelopes.

  • If desired an acknowlegdement of receipt by email is possible.
  • If the number of applications exceeds the number of study-places in our course of study, a performance-comparison will be done after the application-period. The best applicants will get admission.
  • Within 4 weeks after the application-deadline the admitted students will be informed. The not accepted applicants will be informed, too.
  • It is not possible to answer any inqueries about the status of your appliaction.
  • Due to administration procedures, we can not communicate the different reasons for rejecting an application.
  • No documents are returned back.

Fees/Expenses

The tuition fee charged for the course of study is 725 EUR per semester from winter term 2006. This 725 EUR includes the new general tuition fee of 500 EUR, that has to be paid by each student in the Federal State of Lower Saxony.

The service contribution fee charged for studying at the FH OOW is 213 EUR per semester (at time of printing/publishing). That includes the so-called "Semester Ticket", which entitles students to free-of-charge use of local public transport in and around Emden and trains to Hamburg, Hannover, Oldenburg for one semester (six months).

The costs of living in Emden are less than in other German cities, but very often higher than in your home country, e.g. accommodation (150 - 200 EUR per month), health insurance (50 EUR per month) etc, adds up to about 500-700 EUR per month.

Visa

Students coming from states not belonging to the European Union need a visa for study purpose for Germany. It could take about 3-4 months to get this visa for study purpose. Your first visa will be valid for 90 days.

After arriving in Emden it will be extended for one year. If you need some more time to finish the masters course, you will receive another extension.
