For my class PROGRAMMING 2 (summer semester 2010)

Optional literature:

Textbook: "Sprechen Sie Java", Hanspeter Mössenböck, dpunkt.verlag.

This is the best Java book for beginners that I have yet seen. My class does not necessarily follow the book, but the book provides an alternative perspective on Java.

http://java.sun.com Comprehensive Java tutorial in English. All the Java documentation you could ever want is here.

Look under Learning / Tutorials & Code Camps / Java Tutorial. Then you can pick one of: First Steps, Getting started, Learning the Java language, etc.
